STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS ....CUP FINALS REPORTScott Warton was the hero as second division Mill Madrid beat first division Grassmoor Sports 4-0 to win the Dey and Co Alma Cup at Saltergate. Grassmoor started the game as favourites but almost went a goal behind in the fourth minute, keeper Ian Wall making a save low down to his right whilst five minutes later his counterpart Kevin Tye was in action, denying Phil Robb with a smart save. A minute later and Grassmoor conceded a free kick on the angle of the penalty area and Scott Warton’s clever shot deceived the Grassmoor defence to creep in at the un-guarded near post to give the Mill the lead. As the half progressed it was Wall who was the busier of the two keepers, firstly denying Ashley Hall with a brave save at the feet of the striker on twenty-five minutes and then punching clear when under pressure from the same player moments later. At this stage the Mill were beginning to take the initiative, Wall again doing well on thirty-five minutes saving Ryan Cancellara’s effort at his near post and defender John Clarke made two excellent last ditch tackles to keep his side in the game as Mill Madrid went in search of the second goal. At the other end John Parsons almost found a way through but was thwarted by some solid defending. Grassmoor opened the second half brightly but disaster struck on fifty-two minutes when Mill Madrid were awarded a free kick thirty-five yards from goal. Up stepped Warton who tried his luck with a harmless looking shot which Wall failed to deal with, palming the ball into the roof of his net as Mill Madrid doubled their advantage. On the hour mark Grassmoor’s Ashley Walters received a caution for an over zealous tackle and was quickly followed into the referees notebook by colleague Ian Moss for a similar indiscretion, however when the former received a second caution on seventy-one minutes and was dismissed his side’s difficult task became much more so although substitute Andy Woolvern almost got on to the end of a Parsons through ball moments before Andy Hone was brought down in the Grassmoor area eleven minutes from time. There was no question as to who would take the spot kick as Warton converted the penalty to complete a man of the match winning hat trick and when Luke Strong was the quickest to react as Wall did well to parry Hall’s shot, firing home from close range six minutes from time Mill Madrid’s victory was complete and the Alma Cup was theirs. For the first forty-five minutes of the final of the Ace Sports Chatsworth Cup there was little to choose between Dronfield Town and fourth division champions Barlborough Royal Oak with clear cut opportunities being at a premium. If anything Town had the edge with Scott Staples flashing a shot just wide of an upright on twenty-one minutes. Royal Oaks best chance of the half came as a poor back pass almost put Steve McMahon through on goal but Town keeper Matt Lakin was alert to the danger and raced off his line to clear. Although the opening half failed to produce a goal only two minutes of the second period had passed when the breakthrough came. Luke Hatcroft’s dangerous ball into the Town penalty area was turned goal wards and as the ball rebounded off a defender it struck Tony Dean to enter the goal and give the Barlborough side the lead. Although the goal had an element of luck about it the second which came three minutes later came from a classic set piece certainly did not, Hatcroft’s pin point corner kick finding the unmarked Paul Blakemore who powered a header passed Lakin from close range. Hatcroft was the supplier again on fifty-six minutes, another precision corner kick this time finding the head of Paul Jones who made it three nil. Town did have chances, Chris Jenkinson’s long range effort being saved by Lee Reynolds on sixty-one minutes and Fabrero’s effort five minutes later also being saved by Reynolds. However it came as no real surprise when Royal Oak added a fourth and a fourth set piece goal it was too, Hatcroft again the supplier, Blakemore bagging himself a second with a well placed header. Town replied almost instantly with a goal of their own, Rob Wood’s crisp shot beating Reynolds from sixteen yards but Royal Oak’s victory was rounded off five minutes from time when substitute Jack Wright placed a well struck shot into the bottom corner of Matt Lakin’s goal to complete not only a memorable win for Barlborough Royal Oak but a memorable season as well. The final of the Mill Hutson Cup paired British Rail with Harleys and despite the hot conditions the players produced a fast paced encounter that was full of commitment from both side’s. Rails Dave O’Hara was in action on twelve minutes diving bravely at the feet of Martin Wheatcroft but there was nothing his opposite number Damian Taylor could do three minutes later when Andy Wilcockson finished with aplomb from fifteen yards. Harleys took this setback in their stride however and the dangerous Nicholas Garvey came close on seventeen minutes before pouncing on a defensive error a minute later to score from ten yards. The chances then came thick and fast at either end with Paul Sharman, Richard Brown and Wilcockson bringing the best out of Harleys keeper Taylor and Scott Smith and Martin Wheatcroft coming close at the other end. The second half began in similar fashion to the first with Rail just beginning to take the upper hand, Wilcockson and Darren Parton coming close before the latter made it 2-1 in Rail’s favour on the hour mark, Ashley’s initial effort being blocked by the keeper before Parton fired home. 2-1 then became 3-1 six minutes later when the unfortunate Taylor did well to block Wilcockson’s effort only to see Richard Brown rifle an un-stoppable shot past him from close range. Although Harleys battled magnificently for the rest of the half their fate was sealed when Andy Wilcockson added a fourth for British Rail, his second of the game, in the closing stages to see British Rail collect the Hutson Cup.
